If you’re looking for a slice of history, the Lee Fair in West Ardsley is an event not to be missed. This charming fair boasts a legacy of over 800 years, making it one of the oldest charter fairs still in operation. Its name pays homage to Dr. Lee, a local vicar who played a crucial role in preserving the fair during the Tudor period.
Originally, the fair celebrated a lively three-week horse fair from August 24 to September 17. Today, however, it has been condensed into two significant days: the 24th, known as First Lee, and the 17th, known as Latter Lee. If either date falls on a Sunday, festivities will carry over to Monday.
Run by the travelling community, the fair offers a vibrant glimpse into traditional Romany culture. Attendees can look forward to seeing colorful Romany caravans, a variety of horses and ponies, and even the occasional donkey. In addition to the equine attractions, you’ll find an array of trade stalls featuring household goods, clothing, and delicious food and drink options.
